Good Neighbor Program

"I was naked and you clothed me"  Matthew 25:36
The Good Neighbor Program helps provide clothing to school-age children in Schenectady County.
Many families struggle to make ends meet and cannot provide adequate clothing for their children.  The Good Neighbor Program allows community members to help each other out by donating clean, gently used or new clothing to a child in need.  Providing children with care packages of clothing not only takes the burden off of the family, but can also help make a child feel more comfortable and confident to face the school day when they know they will have a clean, weather appropriate, well fitted outfit to wear.
How does the Good Neighbor Program hear about a child or family with several children who are in need?
Referrals are made to the Good Neighbor Program from Schenectady County Schools' teachers, nurses and social workers.  We also receive referrals from Schenectady Department of Social Services, community organizations, area food pantries and parishes.
[Please note that we are not accepting clothing donations at this time even though we have not taken down the below information asking for clothing.  New guidelines for accepting clothing donations will be posted soon as we begin to reopen the Good Neighbor Program after the Covid-19 shut down.]

How You Can Help
Do you have gently-used children's clothing that needs a new home? Would you consider purchasing new clothing or making a monetary donation?
If you said "Yes!", the Works of Mercy Initiative's Good Neighbor Program is a great way for you to help children and families in your community.

Clothing Request Form

The Good Neighbor Program is now open and ready to accept your clothing requests.  After months of not being able to fulfill our mission, the Good Neighbor Program will now begin to take requests for clothing for school age children in Schenectady County.

Before you begin filling out the clothing request form, please note that we have had to make some changes to our process related to the COVID-19 pandemic. This may result in slower processing times than usual and/or we may not have all of the items you are requesting. Be assured, we will do our best to complete your request as soon as possible and will include as many of the requested items as we are able to include.

WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DELIVER CLOTHING TO YOU.  ARRANGEMENTS WILL BE MADE FOR YOU TO SAFELY PICK UP CLOTHING PACKAGES CURBSIDE AT YOUR CHOICE OF LOCATION LISTED ON THE REQUEST FORM.
If you work for a Schenectady County school or agency that serves families with children in need of clothing,  click on link below to go to our Clothing Request Form.

THANK YOU!!! to everyone who has donated clothing or monetary gifts to the Good Neighbor Program.  Because of your generosity, we were able to provide clothing packages to over 530 children during the 2018-19 school year.  In addition to school clothes, many of these children received winter jackets and were provided with new sneakers or winter boots.  All received new underwear and socks. Some received items such as bathing suits, sandals and flip-flops and during the winter many warm hats, gloves, mittens and scarves were given out.

Monetary support is also most welcomed as we often have to buy an item or two when our inventory is low in a particular size and a child has an immediate need for that size.  If you would like to make a gift today, go to our DONATE page and indicate in the comments that your donation is for the  Good Neighbor Program.

Your donations to the Good Neighbor Program matter:

"I just wanted to thank you and your volunteers for your help with our family that needed assistance this past week. They truly appreciated the bags of clothing and we appreciate the time and energy you put into helping families such as ours." (Family Service Worker, Schenectady Community Action Program, Inc.)

"All of the families we gave clothing to were so grateful and overwhelmed - please thank your volunteers and thanks to God for providing!"
